I've been wanting to do a post about this kind of games for a very long time. I will review and tell my opinion about some Visual Novels I have played (DS Games). Remember that I have my reasons for reviewing this or that about a game, so accept it, please.
Ace Attorney Series
This is a game that goes straight into the category of Visual Novel. I think it's a famous game. I really enjoyed playing it. Now for the plot: You play as the Attorney Phoenix Wright (In the first three games), while you have to deffend your clients, that have been accused of murder (most of the time). You have to proceed with an investigation, where you look for evidence, ask some witnesses about your client, and try to solve the mystery. Afterwards you play in the courtroom, where you have to cross-examinate the witnesses, for finding contradictions in their testimonies. You present evidence, so that in
the end, you get your client a
non guilty veredict.
It is a nice game, in my opinion. While the first turnabout usually proceeds without investigation, afterwards you usually have two investigations and two courtroom playing per Turnabout. The games usually have 4 turnabouts, with different names each one.
The games are very interesting. In order to get your client a Not Guilty veredict, you have to dig in their past, ask their closest friends, discover the truth, search in the tiniest spots for an information that reveals the truth. One of the best points in this game is that not everybody is going to give you information willingly. In that case "Psyche-Locks" appear. Locks that hide the truth of the people. You have to break them with evidence, so that in the end, the person tells you the whole truth.
In the courtroom, you have to hear the testimony the witness is giving, and you have to press them, to find tiny mistakes, that you back up with evidence. That's really easy to understand, still, it's difficult to do. Sometimes it's difficult to see the mistakes in the witness testimony. You have a live bar, so that if you get many penalties for choosing unimportant evidence, or saying that there are contradictions when there aren't, then you have to start again.
Otherwise, I think the game is really well made. The characters have nice background stories, that sometimes make you feel sad for them, hate them, pity them, feel happy for them etc. The graphics aren't something from the other world, but the designs are well made. The characters look good and they are overall well drawn. The atmosphere is well done as well. The scenery fits each turnabout well, and the music is really nice sometimes. While really simple, it's not bad. The soundtrack fits the mood in many ocassions. Even if in the turnabouts you deal with murder, it's by no means explicit, so a teenager can play it.
So... Pros and Con
Pros:
-Good Background Stories
-Entertaining
-Good graphics, music and background effects
Cons:
-Sometimes it's difficult to prove things
-You may get struck sometimes.
Its length is really good. Is not short, but not extremly long.
Overall it is a nice game-
